Kara Komarnitsky: Our Oceans

Kara Komarnitsky grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah and is now a junior majoring in Dance at Ohio State University with minors in Environmental Science and Business. In 2018 Kara received the Sterling Scholar Award for Dance for the greater Salt Lake City area and the Outstanding Student Choreography Award at the Utah High School Dance Festival. At OSU she has performed works by faculty, graduate, and undergraduate students as well as choreographing her own works. Kara is President of the OSU Sierra Club Student Coalition and is currently researching how art can serve as environmental advocacy.

Submission:

I choreographed this piece four years ago on Hillcrest High School Dance Company. It is titled “Our Oceans” and explores the impact of ocean acidification on coral reef ecosystems. It seeks to humanize the environmental damage and inspire the audience to act before it is too late.
